Bhut Jolokia Seedling

$7.00

Please allow 5 – 6 weeks for delivery of this item

Seedlings are available on a pre-order basis all year around. Time from order to delivery is 5-6 weeks. These seedlings are for indoor growing during the colder months (unless you live up north in QLD where the weather is warmer during winter), allowing you to get a head start come Spring.

PLEASE NOTE: Chilli plants are tropical, and so during the colder months seedlings typically need to be grown indoors as the cold temperature will kill the plant. If you live in North QLD, your winter may not be as cold as other parts of Australia, so growing outside during Autumn and Winter may be an optoin. Most chilli plant varieties we sell need temperatures of at least 22 degrees celcius day and night to thrive. Please be aware when buying these seedlings during Autumn/Winter you do so at your own risk and acknowledge that they will need to be grown indoors under strong natural light or T5/LED lights or you live in an area where tempetures don't drop below 22 degrees.

Description

Bhut Jolokia Seedling

The Bhut Jolokia (or Ghost Pepper), originates from Northern India. It held the Guinness world record for hottest chilli from 2007 to 2011 and was the first chilli to hit over 1,000,000 Scoville Heat Units until the Naga Viper came along.

The Bhut Jolokia’s heat level builds slowly, but do not be mistaken, this is a superhot chilli. It’s more heat then flavour so pods can be used in dishes and as flakes to add heat without affecting other flavour profiles.

Species: Capsicum Chinense

Flavour: More heat then flavour.

Colour: Pods ripen from green to red

Heat Level: 7/10

Scoville Heat Units: 855,000-1,041,427

Having a hard time germinating seeds or want to take the hassle out of growing from seed and get a head start come Spring time?

Our seedlings have been germinated by us under controlled conditions earlier on in the year so they’re ready come Spring. They will come with a minimum of 4 leaves, typically as pictured.

Seedlings have not been topped, as we leave this up to you. If you are unsure what topping is, please have a look at this video on YouTube. and check out our frequently asked questions.

We’ve germinated from seeds we’ve harvested from our own plants, however pods have been open pollinated (albeit indoors). Although unlikely, pod variations may exist.

What’s included

Seedlings come in a 50mm Jiffy Coir and will have a minimum of 4 leaves. Seedlings will not come with chillies. Photos of chillies are for illustrative purposes only to show the type and characteristics of the variety.

We recommend stripping off the Coir netting prior to planting, even though Jiffy advertise their netting as biodegradable, it can take some time to break down. Because the seedlings are still young, the root disturbance will not kill nor severely disrupt the seedling, provided it is saturated before removing.

If you’ve never grown chillies before or gifting this to someone who may not have a green thumb, we send our comprehensive Guide to Growing Chillies with all our plant and seedling orders. You can also check out our frequently asked questions or contact us if you have any other questions.

Care

Chilli plants prefer tropical weather, and typically the best time to plant is in Spring. You will need to determine (based on the climate in your area) when the best time to plant is to avoid damaging or potentially killing the plant if there’s a frost risk.

Our plants require hardening, which means getting them used to the full strength of the sun by increasing their exposure over a 1 week period. Exposing them to full sun straight away may burn the leaves (they turn white and crisp) and stunt growth.

Please be extremely careful when handling chillies from this plant. Anything at or above the Scoville scale of a habanero (300,000 SHU) can cause severe pain if handled incorrectly. Keep out of reach of children. Handle ripe pods with gloves to avoid accidently squeezing the chilli and releasing it’s oils onto your skin. Do not consume on an empty stomach.
